Values Based Leadership

Providing Inspiration and Facilitation for leaders to enable them to develop values based leadership skills and values based cultures.

What is Values Based Leadership?

It is a leadership style that builds on the shared values and beliefs of the leader and the team, aligned with an organisation’s values and mission.

Values based leaders are transparent about sharing and communicating their values and helping their staff to connect to their core values and the values of those they serve and support.

Values based leaders understand how to bring people together by articulating a common set of values, improving the cohesiveness of the team and their willingness to work together for a shared cause.

Values based leaders draw on these shared values for direction, guidance, motivation and decision-making. They empower and support their teams to live the organisation's values in their work every day so that together they can achieve a shared vision.

In his book From Values to Action, Harry Kraemer describes 4 principles and characteristics of values based leaders and how to develop and put them into action. For more information on the four principles of Values Based Leadership, see our Book Store recommendations.

What is Values Based Culture?

Your organisational culture is the character and personality of your workplace and what makes your workplace unique. It is made up of the shared characteristics of the people in your workplace and includes values, traditions, ways of doing things, beliefs, attitudes, relationships, behaviours and workplace norms.

Our Culture Iceberg Model shows what a values-based culture looks like in practical terms:

  • It puts the values of the organisation at the centre of everything it SAYS (the articulated culture) and DOES (the lived culture).

  • It ensures it’s staff, customers and services users SEE and know what the values are and FEEL the impact and experience of those values every day.

  • It is clear about how it EXPECTS everyone to behave and do great work when living the values and  it consistently puts the values into practice during good and challenging times in the way in which it DECIDES what the right thing to do is.

"Culture is the way we do things around here."

"Culture is a set of living relationships working towards a shared goal. It is not something you are, it's something you do."
